Man Sues His Company For Making Him Do ‘Nothing’ at Work

If someone is going to pay you to work, you want to make sure they have something for you to do. As strange as it sounds, that’s the obvious arrangement.

You work, they pay you.

But if they pay you and you don’t even work? That sounds kind of cool, right?

Well, not according to one man from Dublin, Ireland. Instead, he’s upset about his employer paying him to “do nothing.” How upset? Well, upset enough to sue.

The man’s name is Dermott Mills and he was hired to do a job in finance at the Irish Rail company, he said. But most of his workday was spent reading, taking walks and eating. This is like every person’s dream workday. Paid, to just basically hang out.

Mills, however, wanted to feel as if he had a purpose, a real career. For that, perhaps he cannot be blamed.

“I go into my cubicle, I turn on my computer, I look at emails. There are no emails associated with work, no messages, no communications, no colleague communications,” Mills said, via India Times.

He added that he actually only goes into the office two days a week. The rest of the time is spent “working” from home. No matter where he is, the lack of duties has him clocking out early. He still gets paid his full salary regardless.

Now, he alleges in a suit against the company, he is being prevented from using his skills on the job.

It will be really interesting to see how this all plays out. Will his case be tossed, with the courts deciding that as long as he’s getting paid, well, the rest s up to the employer? Or will he eventually be declared the winner, with his employer forced to pile on the work, stress him out, and make him earn every last cent?

Or perhaps there will be a middle ground: Mills shows up for work, and work is what his employer delivers.
