This Store is Putting Spam in Security Boxes to Stop People From Stealing Them

To some, SPAM is the bane of their existence. But for some, it is the best thing they have ever tasted. Personally, I don’t mind it. I don’t go looking out for it, but if it’s there, well it’s there. But, the customers at this grocery store LOVE it. So much so, that the store is taking measures in order to protect their precious spam and keep people from stealing it.

Basically, this New York store decided to put their Spam and other Celebrity brand ham inside plastic theft deterrent boxes, because shoplifting has increased. A shopper decided to share the hilarious images of the canned items on Twitter, and as expected the post blew up.

Locking Up The Spam!

“The thoroughly revamped loss-prevention regime at the Port Authority Duane Reade has finally created something of beauty, a sort of Jeff Koons homage,” user @willystaley tweeted. Holding up a Celebrity Ham, he captioned the picture, “I’d love to have one to keep, case and all — but there’s only one way to do that…”

As far as how you open it, according to the New York Post, a cashier has to remove the Spam from its box using a magnetic device. Because throwing it on the floor is definitely not an option. How much do these products run for? Typically they are between $3.50 and $4.

Not only is Spam being locked up! According to Fox News, tuna is also being locked inside plastic containers, as well as sardines! Who in the world is still buying sardines, though? That’s a big no for me.

But, that’s not all that’s being nicked. According to Business Insider, there have been reports of people shoplifting cigarettes, contraceptives, liquor, over-the-counter medication, health and beauty products, and teeth-whitening strips.

Nothing, and I mean nothing is safe.

What do you think?

  1. This is not new. I saw this in southern CA pre-COVID. Soon everything will be locked up in stores in states that don’t punish petty theft. It’ll eventually turn into curbside pick up as the only option.
