Florida Driver Casually Tied Giant Alligator to Bumper

A Florida highway driver stunned passing motorists when they casually tied a giant alligator to their car bumper. It happened on September 3 — during Labor Day weekend —so there were a lot of cars on the road. The driver and their alligator were on Interstate 95 in Brevard County.

While the driver has not been identified, they probably weren’t breaking any laws. Since it’s alligator hunting season, permits to hunt alligators are available for under $300 for Florida residents. Alligator season runs from August 15 to November 1. Its primary purpose is to keep the alligator population in-check and reduce “nuisance alligators.”

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission allows for lawfully hunted alligators to be strapped to a vehicle. So, while we don’t know whether or not this particular alligator was lawfully hunted, it wasn’t a cause for investigation by the authorities. Rather, the internet is just curious about the giant alligator.

People posted photos of the gator all over Facebook, expressing their surprise and alarm. It was quite the sight, as the alligator was so long its tail needed to be wrapped around its body.

“Spotted on I-95 yesterday,” posted Karen Kress. “I’m accepting suggested captions….obviously this is in floriduh.”

Florida Alligator Hunting Season Runs From Aug 15 – Nov 1

News 6 WKMG posted a photo of the vehicle with the gator strapped to it and there was a flurry of comments. Some remarked that the car should have been pulled over for a permit check at the very least.

Others mentioned that the transportation method would probably taint the taste of the gator meat.

“Nothing like some exhaust fumes tainting your gator meat! Sounds delicious.”

And others expressed concern for animal cruelty, although they probably didn’t know that the giant alligator tied to the car bumper was dead…

“Only in Florida you will see that but that’s so wrong to do to the poor Gator I hope or she is alright,” one person commented.

Chalk it up to another day, another weird sighting on a Florida highway.
